Phil Nielsen hired as CUP Girls’ Technical Director

The Cincinnati United Soccer Club is excited to announce the hiring of Phil Nielsen as the new CUP Girls Technical Director. He will oversee the entire CUP Girls’ program and its involvement in the Cincinnati Development Academy. “We at CU were honored to have received so many highly qualified applications for this open position in our club. Phil’s background in club soccer, college coaching and his involvement in U.S. Soccer made him a perfect hire for CUP,” stated Scott Rodgers, Executive Director for Cincinnati United.

Cincinnati United’s club President Dan Kunkemoeller said the following about CUP’s new Girls Technical Director, “Our club is excited to have such an accomplished and knowledgeable leader join our staff. Phil is the type of leader we desired to guide our girls program through the continued changing soccer landscape.  We are looking forward to him joining our great staff”.

Originally, hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, Phil comes to Cincinnati from Naperville, Illinois where he was the Executive Director for Team Chicago Soccer Club and a coach for the Eclipse Develop Academy. During his time in Chicagoland he has been extremely active in the Regional and National Olympic Development Program as a Region II Senior Staff coach, and has served in several roles with U.S. Soccer including as a U17, U20 and U23 Girls National Team Scout and as the U.S. Soccer Training Center Liaison for Illinois & Wisconsin. Phil has also served on the Midwest Regional League (MRL) Club Leaders Committee with CU’s own Scott Rodgers.

While at Team Chicago Phil grew the club from 300 Elite players to over 475 Elite Players. In 2013 Phil coached Team Chicago Academy-Botafogo to the U18 US Youth Soccer National Championship. The same team was the US Youth Soccer National Runners-Up in 2014.

Phil’s coaching background includes coaching in his native Denmark, as well as at Kalamazoo College and Smith College, and youth and high school soccer in Michigan and Massachusetts. In 2007 he spent five months in Brazil coaching with Cruzeiro Esporte Clube and Team Chicago Brazil, and he has spent time studying in Holland with the Ajax academy and in Denmark with the Brøndby IF academy. Phil has done his coaching education in Scotland (UEFA A & B), USA (USSF B and NSCAA Premier), and Denmark (UEFA C).

“I am extremely excited to be joining the Cincinnati United/CUP family. I want to thank Scott Rodgers, Dan Kunkemoeller, and George Stinson for this opportunity and their trust in me. From afar I have admired the great work the club has done over the past decade, and I know I am joining one of the most professional youth clubs in the country. Through my ODP work I have been fortunate enough to coach a number of current and former CUP players, and I have always been extremely impressed with how well-prepared they have been. This speaks volumes about the quality of the CUP coaching staff.”

Phil Nielsen will officially begin his time with Cincinnati United Soccer Club and the Cincinnati Development Academy January 15, 2018.
