In 1991, John McGinlay moved south to link up with Millwall, and it was here where he first linked up with the much-respected former Scotland star Bruce Rioch, a manager whom he was later to link up with at Bolton. While at Millwall, he played up front with Teddy Sheringham and his teammate Kasey Keller (former US Men’s National Team captain/current goalkeeper for Fulham) played in goal. McGinlay eventually moved on to Bolton and formed a useful goal scoring partnership with Andy Walker as Bolton finished runners up to Stoke City in the old Division Two.

Whilst scoring in the FA Cup games against higher opposition such as Liverpool, Everton and Arsenal, McGinlay also proved he could be consistent at league level. In 1993-94 he scored 25 goals in a mid-table Bolton team thus resulting in the first of 14 caps for Scotland.

The following year he helped Bolton get to the League Cup final where they lost out to Liverpool, but the anguish felt was soon quelled with an enthralling Play-Off Final win over Reading at Wembley Stadium. McGinlay suffered from injuries in Bolton's first crack at Premiership football, but was still Bolton's top league goal scorer that season with six goals to his credit. Sadly this could not keep the club in the top division and they were relegated after just one disappointing season.

McGinlay, a determined and passionate character, was one of the key Bolton players in 1996–97 season who ensured that Bolton regained their place in the Premiership. He shared 54 goals with strike partner Nathan Blake which helped send the Wanderers up as First Division champions with a record 98 points and 100 goals tally. Two of these goals in April 1997, a penalty and one from open-play against Charlton Athletic, proved to be the last goals scored at the old Burnden Park stadium prior to re-location to the Reebok Stadium.

John was voted by Bolton fans as the greatest striker in Bolton’s history. In 2004 he represented Bolton Wanderers on local radio station Tower FM. He later went on to present a celebrity edition of BBC's Cash in the Attic but moved back to America later that year.

John is currently the Boys Director of Coaching with Cincinnati United Premier.

Many of the players on that team were from the CUP Red team he has coached since 2002. Throughout the development of the team, CUP Red reached the OSYSA State Cup finals at U17 (losing in overtime). They reached at least the semi-finals of 10 major tournaments – beating nearly 30 State Cup Champions and/or finalists in the process. Most importantly, each member of the team received a Division I Soccer scholarship offer, with 16 girls currently playing in college.

Brian is passionate about the development of youth. He continues to be a leader in coaching education and youth development across the region. He is currently in his eighth year as an ODP Region II Staff Coach, has returned as a clinician for the Ohio South Lecture Series, has been an instructor for OSYSA, and whose thoughts on development have been published in soccer publications such as ‘Soccer Ohio’ and the ‘NSCAA Journal’. One of Brian’s proudest accomplishments is his leadership in organizing and leading along with other Directors of Coaching from Ohio South in the implementation of small-sided games.
