Cincinnati United Awarded US Soccer Grant

Cincinnati United is pleased to announce that is has received a grant from the US Soccer Foundation for the purchasing of synthetic turf fields.  The foundation awarded eighteen Synthetic Field Building grants to develop new FieldTurf soccer fields around the country. Supported by adidas, FieldTurf and MLS W.O.R.K.S., Major League Soccer’s community outreach initiative, the Synthetic Field Building program provides safe places for children to play in at-risk communities.

"We are honored and thankful to receive this grant from the US Soccer Foundation," said Scott Rodgers, Executive Director for Cincinnati United Soccer Club.  "This grant will help in our support of the building of turf fields and complex at Voice of America (VOA) in Mason, Ohio."

Since its inception in 1994, the U.S. Soccer Foundation has awarded more than $55 million in grant awards to non-profit organizations in all 50 states.

The grant was written by Rodgers and staff coach David Trapp.

2012 Elite Invitational Registration Now Open

The application window for the 2012 Elite Invitational Soccer Tournament on April 21-22 is currently open.  This girls only event for u8-u14 teams has grown to be one of the top youth girls tournament during the spring season in Region 2, attracting some of the best teams from Region 2 as well as Region 1, Region 3, and Canada.

"The Elite Invitational has grown to be one of the top youth girls tournaments for u8-u14 in the region," says Tournament Director Joe Wuest.  "The event has grown over the last several years from a weekend of friendlies to an event hosting region league matches for the MRL, league matches for the TPL, and games featuring some of the best teams from multiple regions."

This year's event already has some state champions, runner ups, US Club Regional Finalists, and top teams from the region.  Participating clubs this year and past years include: CUP Crew Jrs/Cincinnati United, OP Eagles, Vardar Soccer, Michigan Hawks, International Soccer Club, Empire United, Birmingham United, Cleveland FC, TNFC (TN), Brentwood Soccer Club, Michigan Gators, FC Pittsburgh, Crew Jrs, St Louis Scott Gallagher, and more.

"The quality of teams at the Elite Invitational is some of the finest in the Midwest," says Director of Coaching Bobby Puppione.  "We focus on bringing in quality teams over the quantity of teams so we can showcase some of the most skilled teams from across multiple regions."

Cincinnati United Players Honored by NSCAA
Two girls players and one boys player from Cincinnati United have been named to the 2011 NSCAA High School All-America team.  Liz Slattery (Girls U17 CUP Gold), Meghan Blank (Girls U17 CUP Gold), and Calum Latham (Boys U18 CUP Gold) earned this honor for their efforts during the 2011 fall high school season.  The athletes will be recognized at the annual All-America Luncheon, to be held in the Kansas City Convention Center's Grand Ballroom on Saturday, January 14, in conjunction with the 2012 NSCAA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.



Congratulations to CUP alums Austin Berry and Niro Wimalasena for being named NSCAA All Americans for 2011.  Berry, a senior from Cincinnati, was named to the Division 1 third team for his efforts at the University of Louisville.  Wimalasena, a senior from Mason, was named to the Division 3 second team for his play at Case Western University.  Well done boys and to all of the CUP boys and girls players on great fall seasons.

Former CUP player Austin Berry and his Louisville Cardinals Men's Soccer team have advanced to the 2011 Elite 8 in the NCAA Division 1 soccer tournament with a 4-2 win over Maryland.  The Cardinals will take on the winner of the UCLA-Rutgers game with a berth in the Final Four at stake.

Berry, a senior defender and all-American, is also on the Hermann Trophy Watch List |read more|.  The Hermann Trophy is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate soccer player.

Good luck to Austin and congratulations to all of the CU and CUP alumni across the country on their successful collegiate seasons.

Cincinnati United Players Honored
Cincinnati United Soccer Club had numerous players and coaches achieve post season awards for their work on the field during the fall 2011 high school season.  CU captured player and coach of the year honors on the girls and boys sides, along with numerous all state and all district honorees from Ohio and Kentucky.

“We are very proud of all of our boys and girls high school aged players and their accomplishments this fall during their scholastic soccer seasons,” said CUP Boys Director of Coaching, John McGinlay.  “Our players have worked tirelessly to help their schools succeed and now we are looking forward to having them back in the club to continue their success."  Congratulations to all of our CU and CUP players on their achievements during the fall season.

Cincinnati United Partners with Dickʼs Sporting Goods
Families to Receive Discounts and Club to Get Added Benefits

Cincinnati United Soccer Club, the largest and most successful youth soccer club in Cincinnati and the #1 affiliate of the MLS Columbus Crew, has partnered with Dickʼs Sporting Goods to provide the clubʼs families a discount on soccer gear, other sports merchandise, and sponsorship money for the Cincinnati United Cup tournament in August. 

“Cincinnati United and Dickʼs Sporting Goods are excited to partner to support youth soccer in Cincinnati,” said Lisa Wiedmann, Cincinnati United Soccer Club Board Member and Cincinnati United Cup Advertising Coordinator.  “Our families will be able to use Dickʼs Sporting Goods to get discounts on soccer equipment and other sports merchandise for their 2011 soccer season.”  Sponsorship money from the the sports retailer will benefit the clubʼs members as tournament proceeds help pay for scholarships for players in need and to fund the clubʼs annual team camp for u8-u14 boys and girls teams in the fall.

Cincinnati United Online Video Training

Cincinnati United has its own YouTube Channel.  Developed by the Directors of Coaching and staff, the Cincinnati United YouTube Channel is home to a variety of training videos for players and parents to view.  Skills, training activities, highlights, and more can be found on this website.

"Video technology is just another tool to help connect what is taught at the training grounds to the player's home," said Bobby Puppione, Director of Coaching for CU Sycamore-Mason.  CU Lakota Director of Coaching Jon Caldwell echoes Puppione's sentiments.  "We teach skillful, attractive soccer and the use of these videos highlighting this style will allow our CU and CUP players of all ages to improve this type of soccer on their own."

Cincinnati United Teams in Action

The Boys U-16 CUP Crew Juniors - Silver won the Norcross Nike Cup Boys U16 Elite in Atlanta. The team defeated Georgia FC Elite 96 in the final 1-0. Great start to what looks like a promising season for these young men.



The Girls U-13 CUP Crew Juniors - Gold team finished off their fall season by winning the top flight of the St Louis Scott Gallagher Girls Fall Classic.  In group play, CUP defeated Gretna Enyo (NE) 3-0, Eclipse Select (IL) 3-0, and tied FC Milwaukee (WI) 0-0 to advance to the semi-finals.  In that match, the girls battled SLSG ECNL (MO) through regulation and overtime before winning 4-3 on kicks from the mark.  In the final, CUP matched up with Carmel Elite (IN) and came away with a 1-0 win to capture the event.  Congrats to the girls and DOC Bobby Puppione on a fine weekend.



The Girls U-13 CU Lakota-Monroe - Fusion team recently was tournament champions in the BSA Haunted Festival red division.  Fusion shutout Grand Lake Mud Dogs and Tecumseh Arrows and beat CSA to advance to the championship game.  They shutout WAVE 98 from West Virginia to win the championship! Fusion were also CUSL league champions!  Going undefeated scoring 29 goals and allowing 6 for the season!  The team includes Brittany Leyda, Erin Cleaves, Rhys Green, Tara Morris, Carolyn Bohn, Erin Maclennan, Emmaline Russell, Hayley Roach, Laura Babbit, Julia Kuhr, Reagan Snyder, Allyson Osborne, Emily Hensley, Kaitlyn Rhodes, Sara Mahmood, Gabbie Wiesner.  The team is coached by Jason Leyda, Brian Maclennan, Chris Plesa and Katie Rhodes


The Girls U-12 CU Southeast - Panthers traveled to Sandusky, Ohio October 28-30, 2011 for the Kalahari Cup Tournament. The Panthers completed 3 wins to advance to the Finals, 1-0 versus the Bay Area Stompers, 4-0 versus the Woodridge Bulldogs, 1-0 versus the Medina Classics.  The final game to determine winner of the U12 White bracket was an exciting game versus the Vermillion Anchors. After regulation play, a 1-1 draw sent the Panthers into double overtime and eventually Penalty Kicks.  The CUSE Panthers game home the finalists after a 2-1 loss after penalty kicks.  Team members include: Amanda Reinhardt, Audrey Felton, Audrey Koster, Olivia Burdette, Olivia Hollis, Savannah Gambill, Rie Voyt, Elsa Reiter, Kate Delaney, Natalie Hollis, Lily Schoettmer.  They are coach by Asst Coach John Delaney and Head Coach Darren Reinhardt.
 
 

The Boys U-14 CU Lakota-Monroe - Cheetah won the Kolping American Soccer Cup Blue Division championship on September 10-11.  See the enclosed picture.  Also, the boys finished in First Place in the CUSL U14 Second Division with a record of 7-1-0.  Over the 8 league games, the team only allowed 3 goals while scoring 17.
 
The Boys U-14 CU Sycamore-Mason - Storm team finished as finalists in the Forest Park Invitational.  In group play, the boys defeated CUSE Galaxy 1-0, tied Warren County  Blue 0-0, and beat STAR Reds 1-0 to advance to the final.  In the championship match, Storm battled tough but lost the match 2-1 to CUSE B97 Premier.  The team is coached by Dan Fitzgerald and trained by Chris Hopkins.  Congrats boys!

The Girls U-9 CU Sycamore-Mason - Barcelona and Girls U-10 CU Southeast - Cheetahs capped off a great BSA Haunted Classic tournament by battling each other in the finals at u10.  After a hard fought 50 minutes, Barcelona came out on top to win the event with the Cheetahs finishing as runner-ups.  For the tournament, Barcelona scored 24 goals and gave up 3.  They are coached and trained by DOC Bobby Puppione.  For the tournament, CU Southeast Cheetahs scored 13 goals.  The team is coached by John Ericksen.  Congrats to both teams!
 

The Boys U-16 CUP Crew Juniors - Fusion picked up their first tournament title this season by winning the Copa division of the Adidas Germantown Invitational Tournament.  In group play, Fusion tied Express 96 Orange and beat Chicago Pride Academy to advance to the semifinals.  In that match, the boys defeated Atlanta Fire United 96 Elite to make the finals.  In the championship match, Fusion beat Lou Fusz Mannion-Premier to take home the title.  The team also finished as finalists of the ICL Indianapolis College Showcase with two wins and one loss on the weekend.  The team is coached by Anders Cedergren.  Congrats boys!
 
 

The Girls U-12 CU Sycamore-Mason - Copa team finished as finalists in their division at the BSA Haunted Classic.  In group play, the girls defeated FC Bellbrook, NKSA, and CSA to advance to the finals.  In the championship match, Copa battled with FOSC but came up just short, losing in penalties.  The team is coached and trained by Jon Gates.  Congrats girls!

The Girls U-12 CU Sycamore-Mason - Questra team finished as champions in their division at the BSA Haunted Classic.  After dropping the first match in prelim play, the girls defeated FC Tippecanoe and BSA Celtic to advance to the final. In the championship match, Questra defeated CSA 2-1 to win the event.  The team is coached and trained by Jon Gates.  Congrats girls!
 
The Girls U-13 CU Sycamore-Mason - Fury finished as finalists in their division of the BSA Haunted Classic.  In group play, the girls went 2-0-1 against Hilliard FC, Gunners FC, and Oakwood United, scoring 12 goals and only allowing 2.  In the finals, after a scoreless game through regulation and overtime, Fury lost a heartbreaker in penalty kicks to Classics Eagles of Columbus.  Congrats girls and coach Jason Rudesill.
 
The Girls U-10 CU Lakota-Monroe  - Tornadoes won the White Division of the BSA Haunted Classic in Beavercreek, Ohio.  The team was able to score a total of 26 goals and won all four of their games.  The Tornadoes defeated CJ United lady Thunder (7-3), Anthony Wayne United (8-2), COSA Club OH U10 Black (6-3) and Waynesville Attack (5-4) in a dramatic shootout.  Pictured are: Gracie Leugers, Talia Dragon, Autumn Housh, Regan Meyer, Cece Bohn, Rylee Oldfield, Anna Huston, Jenna Geis, and Jules Jefferson.  The team is coached by John Leugers, Doug Geis, and Tom Bohn and trained by Claire Wellington.
