Prior to moving to the club, Puppione coached for Birmingham United Soccer Association in Alabama, Alabama Youth Soccer ODP, The Altamont School in Birmingham, West Alabama Soccer Association in Tuscaloosa, Holy Spirit Catholic High School in Tuscaloosa, and Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa.

His philosophy:
"Every player deserves an opportunity to have a positive soccer playing experience.  The coach is the main facilitator of this and should provide an environment to help make sure the player receives this chance.  I will look to provide the right culture for developing every player.  Not only will I teach the players about the game, but I will teach them valuable life lessons that will carry over into their daily lives.  These qualities include hard work, commitment, respect, communication, skill, and passion.  There is no shortcut to success; successful people do more and this will be encouraged daily.  Developing the 4 pillars of the game (technical, tactical, psychological, physical), along with providing a fun, competitive environment will be my primary focus while fostering these important life skills/values."

  • NSCAA National Diploma
  • USSF B License
  • Masters of Secondary Education - grades 7-12, Math concentration
  • Teacher - Indian Hill Middle School, Cincinnnati, Ohio

Mike serves as the Director of Coaching for the Cincinnati United Sycamore competitive side. His primary focus will be the girls U8 through U18 competitive teams for CU Sycamore. He will also coach/train with our U12 boys CUP teams.

During mid 90’s, Lara and Mike worked together coaching a select team of girls through Sycamore Arsenal. Also at this time, he received his Masters in Education from Miami University and accepted a job teaching at Finneytown Middle School where he took over the Finneytown varsity girls soccer head coach position for two years. Mike’s education background and experience with these two teams led him to start the U8 program for the Arsenal Club. Realizing his need for more soccer education to develop these teams, Mike started attending USSF and NSCAA coaching courses where he earned his USSF “B” license and NSCAA “National” diploma. Mike has since brought 5 teams (3 from the boys side and 2 from the girls side) from U8 through to U11 and beyond and all 5 teams have made it to the state cup semi-finals or finals in their first year participating. His latest team of U13 boys which has moved from Sycamore Arsenal onto the CUP realm has experienced unprecedented success. In 3 years of participating at the 11 v 11 format, the team has failed only twice to make it to the semi-finals or finals of the numerous tournaments they have participated in. The team was a state-cup semi-finalist and finalist two years running and has participated only in the top divisions of tournaments throughout the Midwest.

Mike also spent a year with the ODP program heading the coaching and selection of 3 age groups into the state pool. Although he enjoys ODP and would like to continue working with that select group of players, Mike is a family man at heart and has 4 players of his own (his 4 kids who are very involved in youth sports especially CUP soccer) that are now absorbing his time. Educating kids is at the center of Mike’s life. Whether it is teaching math or coaching soccer, he believes that his sole purpose is to create a love for the subject matter. He believes that in order to be successful at any endeavor you have to be a life long learner and plans to achieve his USSF “A” license within the next couple of years.
