Friends and Fellow Wanderers Reunited
John McGinlay and Owen Coyle. Photo Courtesy of Rodney Scot.A 4,000 mile journey across the ocean for one and a 500 mile trek across the country for the other brought England's Bolton Wanderers back together with one of their greatest legends; John McGinlay.  Bolton Wanderers Football Club began in 1874 and play in the English Premier League, which is regarded by many as one of, if not the top league in the world.  Super John, as he is affectionately referred by fans, is considered to be one of Bolton's greatest ever players and his name is still sung at matches and in pubs to this day.  Now living in the States, McGinlay gets to enjoy a life of relative anonymity.  Something he enjoys at this stage of his career, as it allows him to focus on his family and teaching the game he loves to the youth players of America.

After being told the Trotters, the team's nickname, were coming for a pre-season tour in America and Canada, the plans were set and the only thing between McGinlay and his former squad were miles of highway.  He loaded up his SUV, which proudly exclaims "BWFC 10" on its Ohio license plate (BWFC for Bolton Wanders Football Club and 10 for the number he proudly wore for them, the #10 is usually given to a team's most talented and/or most popular player) with his sons Jamie (21), who has begun work on his coaching licenses, and Craig (16), who plays for his father's U17 team, and Craig's closest friend, Elliott, who was visiting from Bolton, England and had just recently arrived.

Craig McGinlay and Owen Coyle. Photo courtesy of Jamie McGinlay. The itinerary included meeting up with the Wanderers in Charlotte, North Carolina, watching them train and play a match against Charlotte Eagles and then travel with them down to Charleston, South Carolina, where they would play Charleston Battery.  The trip would see McGinlay not just reunited with his old side and players he still stays in touch with today, but with his closest mate and former strike partner Owen Coyle, now the manager of Bolton.  After a week that saw McGinlay train with his former squad, the boys receive some new, authentic Bolton jerseys and gear, a little golf, and searing heat and humidity, it was time to part ways once again with his beloved Bolton.  A tough thing to do, McGinlay admits.  The Wanderers would be off to Canada for a match with the MLS's Toronto FC and McGinlay would head back to his duties in Cincinnati, Ohio.  In the end, the trip would mean as much to the current Wanderers, as it did to McGinlay and his sons.  Current players stated what an honor it was to meet Super John McGinlay and in one of his many interviews on the trip, his own words said it best when referring to Bolton Wanderers with that classic grin, "It's my Club, always will be."

In the United States since 2005, the former Scottish International and Bolton striker, can be found sharing his tremendous experience with the American players of the future for one of the largest and most successful youth soccer club's in the Midwest; Cincinnati United Soccer Club.  McGinlay is the Boys Director of Coaching for Cincinnati United Premier, the elite division of the club, where he has seen the hard work and toughness he was known for as a player transferred into successful results for the teams he oversees and especially the ones he manages personally.  His U16 squad is ranked #2 in Ohio and was recently promoted to the MRL Premier Division.  His U17 squad is not only #1 in Ohio, but #2 in the entire country by one ranking outlet and #4 by another.  They recently enjoyed their second Ohio State Cup title in a row and were promoted to the US Youth Soccer National League; the top USYS league in the nation, consisting of elite squads from around the country.  His boys' program recently achieved an unprecedented feat when they had a team in every final match from U11 to U19 of the Ohio State Cup tournament, winning five of them and matching their total from a year prior.

Living for soccer, McGinlay can be found on the sidelines, running a training session, or in front of the television enjoying a match twelve months a year.  His response when someone once asked what he did when he wasn't doing soccer, a puzzled look and a "there isn't anything else is there?"  It's not just what he does, it's who he is.  However, it doesn't define him, it emanates from him.  Under all the guts and thunder, behind the stern chin and piercing gaze, is a loving, caring family man that gave it all for his club, his country, his teammates and manager, and now does the same for his family, friends, and those that are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by him.  In the immortal words of one of those infamous English songs and chants about the man, "There's only one John McGinlay."

CUP Teams Tapped for Prestigious US Youth Soccer National League

Two Cincinnati United Premier teams have been selected to participate in the top USYS league in the country; the US Youth Soccer National League.  The Boys U-17 Cincinnati United Premier - Gold and the Boys U-15 Cincinnati United Premier - Gold will both be playing other tops teams from around the United States beginning this November.  The Boys U-17 CUP Gold, Coached by John McGinlay, CUP Boys Director of Coaching, recently enjoyed their second straight Ohio South State Cup Championship.  The Boys U-15 CUP Gold, coached by Terry Nicholl (formerly coached by Kim Scheper), just earned their third straight Ohio South State Cup Championship and advances at Regionals for the second year in a row.  Best of luck to both of these squads and coaches!
